This is a bowl by Hirokane Yamashita.
After being fired with an iron glaze, the piece is buried in rice husks and fired again at a low temperature; this process allows the clay to absorb carbon, resulting in a deep, metallic quality. Additionally, the use of coarse, feldspar-rich clay causes tiny, glassy speckles to emerge across the surface.
Dimensions: Approx. 8.5 cm (diameter) x 4.0 cm (height)
Capacity: Approx. 60 ml (filled to 80% capacity)
These are works by Yamashita, a potter based in Saga Prefecture.
Characterized by soft forms created primarily through hand-building, these pieces feature multi-layered colors and textures achieved through repeated cycles of high-temperature firing and polishing. They seem to breathe slowly, evoking the feeling of living creatures that exist in a world apart from our own.
